Description: The Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus nursalim) is a species of fish in the order of Persiforms & belonging to the family Labridae. This newly described species is only known from the Indonesia Birds Head Peninsula area of New Guinea & very little is known about them. However, considering its deep water habitat & small size & its presence in the marine protected areas within its restricted range, it is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List Of Threatened Species. This species is locally abundant. It inhabits semi-sheltered areas exposed to periodic strong currents & is invariably associated with gradual rubble slopes at depths ranging from about 5-50 m or more, but is most abundant between 20-35 m. Large aggregations of about 30 males & several hundred females, were occasionally encountered at Triton Bay. There are no known major threats to this species. There are no species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. However, its distribution overlaps several marine protected areas within its range. Male Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus nursalim) perform a courtship ritual in which electric colours are flashed periodically to attract nearby females. The courtship dance takes place every afternoon, beginning about one hour before sundown & continuing until dusk. The modified mouth & lips allow the fish to feed, breathe, & attach to the substrate through suction; Parental care is usually well-developed & the male guards the eggs & sometimes the larvae.
